Carl Shotwell, a fourth year PhD candidate in Andy Berglund’s lab here in The RNA Institute, SUNY Albany, has been awarded a 2 year MDF Fellowship worth $55,000 to support his research. Carl’s focus is on generating synthetic muscleblind-like (MBNL) proteins to assess the various protein components that make up the MBNL protein. Understanding the functional components in MBNL could help determine their role in the progression of myontonic dystrophy type 1, leading to a potential therapeutic strategy to disrupt the disease process. Carl recently presented his work in June 2019 at the International Myotonic Dystrophy Consortium 12 held in Gothenburg Sweden. You can read more about Carl’s fellowship on the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation website.
